Daniel 2:28 says: “There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.” There was no way for me to look into the future to see where this practice of owning my own skill development would take me. But looking back, I realize now that I was learning how to develop a process of self-learning so that I would be able to take advantage of the new technologies that were beginning to unfold in the late 20th century.
Today, I talked about a decision I made back around 1986 to brush up on my typing skills because I knew that, eventually, I would want to buy a new invention: The personal computer. While I wasn’t exactly sure what I would do with a computer down the road, I knew that to make good use of it, I would need to type well.
While my first deliberate effort to teach myself new skills began with typing, the skill of typing, in and of itself, isn’t what I was really training myself to do. Over and over, I’ve noticed that the real skill I was developing was a mindset of owning my personal career development.
To stay relevant in an evolving culture, economy and society, I’m going to have to be willing to learn new things. That means teaching myself those new things.
Daniel 2:28 says: “There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.” There was no way for me to look into the future to see where this practice of owning my own skill development would take me. But looking back, I realize now that I was learning how to develop a process of self-learning so that I would be willing to eagerly teach myself new things to take advantage of the new technologies that were beginning to unfold in the late 20th century. And so, at the age of 60, I am not afraid to learn new things. In fact, I’m eager to discover what God wants me to learn so I can see what it is he has in mind for me to do.
What about you? If you are an older person, then looking back, what can you see about the patterns you’ve developed in your life that have brought you to NOW?
If you are a younger person, what thoughts has this conversation sparked in you to look out into your future and envision the sorts of things you will need to do to Own and shape “The Business of You.”
I’ve taken a stab at diagramming this through process. So far in these first three talks, I’ve discussed the ideas of:
- First, setting goals. Among those goals, I listed the desire to communicate and disciple others
- Second, in order to accomplish those goals, I developed my public speaking skills.
- Third, in order to use the new technological tools that were being invented, I knew I’d have to teach myself new things. While it began with brushing up on my typing skills, I have learned that I was really developing a process to learn what I needed to learn.
